SUPERB OLD SHEFFIELD SILVER PLATED SAMOVAR IN OAK TRUNK Item #28221 A quite amazing piece – this is a large Old Sheffield Plate samovar/tea urn made c. 1830 and in its original oak traveling chest with side handles and lock & key (lock even still works!). There is an armorial device to front of lion rampant above a crown holding a crescent moon. The samovar is complete with its internal cast iron heating element that would have been heated in a coal fire before being placed in the samovar to keep the tea warm. This is an extremely heavy piece! We have estimated overall weight as 16kg. The case alone weighs an estimated 8kg, the Samovar and element c. 8kg. Samovar is superb with no dents other than to the ornate lid finial which has a push to one side, just some very minor scratches to bodywork and still fully operable. The interior element cover has some knocks but its not a huge issue. Wooden case exterior is excellent for its age. Interior baise lining has worn/perished to a degree with age. GBP599.99 click here to view item in our store

The 4 ball feet are a later addition, originally it would have been flat. Overall very good, sound, sturdy and useable. No major dents other than the finial has some knocks & a minor push to the lower body at handle join is the only real niggle, some minor knocks elsewhere. There is visible solder to the interior of the pot at the upper rim area but no corresponding area to the outside that looks like it has ever had any problems with splitting, so may just be how it was made. As mentioned, the 4 feet are a later additions and have visible crude solder joins but not a big problem.
